The Customs for

The Completion and Welcoming a New Sefer Torah

– Collected from the letters and talks of our Rebbeim –

Setting the Date

1. "Set the time for a meritorious day" – it is proper to set the celebration for a day of segulah close to when the time to complete the scroll has come.

Choosing the Synagogue

2. From the two synagogues requesting to welcome the Sefer Torah, the Written Torah should be welcomed by a synagogue where the Oral Torah is learned within.

Preparations for the Completion Ceremony

3. A few days before the completion of the Sefer Torah and the bringing of it to the synagogue, announcements are made in all the synagogues of the city that: on such and such a day, there will be G‑d willing, a completion of the Sefer Torah and the bringing of it to the synagogue; and all congregants are invited to come to give honor to the Torah when it is being carried to the synagogue.

4. Do not use "Ksav Ashuri" for the invitations printed [for the celebration for completing and welcoming the Torah]. Also it is questionable if letters with "Tagim" should be used at all.

5. The "Atzei Hachayim" of the Sefer Torah – should be made specifically of wood (and not iron).

6. Surely, the mantle etc. for the Sefer Torah should also be prepared. Also appropriately prepare – as the custom is for generations – the "Yad" from silver etc., and also a "Keser".

7. The Luchos – as a design on the mantle etc. – should be depicted square.

8. There are those who place effort that when the mantle and sash for the Sefer Torah are sown, they take extra material (of silk) than what is necessary, and before sowing, small pieces are cut from the extra material (for the children, at the time of the Sefer Torah's welcoming – as mentioned in custom 22).

The Day of Completion

9. The day of the completion is a holiday on which tachnun is not said.

10.Chassidim and men scrupulous in their deeds go to Mikvah on this day before the prayers.

11. During the prayers, candles are lit in the Synagogue.

The Completion

12.Dress in Yom Tov clothes.

13. It is customary among all Jews to sell the "letters" (for the benefit of the synagogue or general charity). Still – appropriately check the local custom, especially among those who fear the word of G-d and adhere to His commandments.

14.After finishing the order of the completion – with the sewing of the parchment, lift the Sefer Torah (Hagbah).

15. Afterwards wrap the Sefer Torah, tying its sash and mantle, adorn it with the "Yad" and "Keser".

16. At the time of completing the Sefer Torah and bringing it to the synagogue, every action of honor, and the most scrupulous of honors, made [in the honor of the Torah] – is beautiful, praiseworthy and holy.

The Procession

17. After finishing the order of the completion – the celebration of the procession begins, made – generally – with a multitude of people and great fanfare.

18. Carrying the Sefer Torah and bringing it to the synagogue is a general celebration for all to participate in for the honor of the Torah, including those which for various reasons (as accustomed among the laymen with regards to honor and the like or jealousy and sinah) who do not want to participate in the conclusion of the Sefer.

19. The procession – even if it is done inside the synagogue – is with a canopy and lit candles; with song and musical instruments with great joy.

20. Emphasis should be placed to allow all Jews, men, women and especially the children, to kiss the Sefer Torah's mantle at the time the Sefer Torah is being carried to the synagogue. It is a segulah for health and long life.

21.There are those who bring their children still in the cradle to a position on the processional path of the Sefer Torah, so to merit placing the Sefer Torah’s mantle on the child’s face.

22. There were those who, when the children would kiss the Sefer Torah, the parents would purchase a small piece of the (silk) material used for the mantle of the Sefer Torah (as a protection for the child, with pure faith in the segulah hidden and concealed in beautification of a mitzvah).

The Welcoming to the Synagogue

23. When preparing to enter the synagogue, the gabbai (warden) of the synagogue, his deputies, and the cantor of the synagogue, open the ark and take out the Sifrei Torah.

24. Before the ark is opened, the cantor says “Sifrei Torah, you are requested by all; the holy community; the congregants of the synagogue; to trouble yourself and to go welcome the Sefer Torah which so and so has merited to write and to bring in to this synagogue in a good and successful hour.”

The Celebration in the Synagogue

25. Announce the verses of "Ato Horaysa" – as on Simchas Torah.

26. When the verses of "Ato Horaysa" are completed (including "Av Harachamim") – on Simchas Torah – the Chabad custom in recent years add afterwards the verse: And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall gain strength westward and eastward and northward and southward; and through you shall be blessed all the families of the earth and through your seed.

27.When the verses are completed, seven hakofos are made [while saying the proper verses], and during each hakofoh they would dance with the Sefer Torah – with obvious joy – as on Simchas Torah.

28. Do not remove the "Keser" from the Sefer Torah for the dancing (for fear of it possibly falling).

29. When the seventh hakofoh ends, say “Rejoice and exult in the rejoicing of the Torah,” and while saying this passage an eighth hakofah is made.

30. After the hakafos “Yehallelu” is said, all the Sifrei Torah are placed in the Aron Hakodesh. The “Oleinu” and Mourner’s Kaddish is said.

Seudat Mitzvah

31. At the conclusion of the order of completing the Sefer Torah, celebrate with a festive meal in honor of the Mitzvah, at times – with various "mezonot" and drinks alone.

32. The custom is for the celebrant to wear a new garment – or to eat a new fruit – and make the blessing "Sheyechiyanu" [aloud].

33.During the festive meal talk words of Torah, and words of inspiration to set fixed times for [study of] Torah, dissemination of Torah with the awe of Heaven, and strengthening of those who learn Torah. (At the time of the completing of the "Moshiach's Sefer Torah", the Chassidic discourse which begins with the words, "To comprehend the concept of writing a Torah" was said).

34. Excerpt of a letter of the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, o.b.m.: "At the time of the rejoicing with the joy of the Torah … extend to them [the participants] my blessings of Mazal Tov, and may the Holy One, blessed be He merit us to rejoice with the joy of the Torah together with greeting our righteous Moshiach speedily, Amen, Kein Yehi Ratzon".

We hope your vacations and times spent with your families were meaningful. After a hectic vacation with a Chanukah packed season, the family needed some quality time. So, on Sunday, we headed out to Clear Lake together as a family to kasher someone's kitchen and searched for seashells on galveston beach. Ok, it was a little cold for that, but, it was memorable. :)

Monday afternoon we took the kids for a visit to Zuma, one of these blinking lights, noisy arcade places, and they were closed. Where to go now? Um, let's go to.... Austin! Just a slight detour... 290 allows you to ge a little taste of Texas, so we looked up the history of the towns as we passed through. As we cruised through Brenham, we read about the Toubins. They caringly and lovingly look after the shul that still stands near downtown Brenham. Built in 1893, B'nai Abraham Synagogue in the oldest orthodox shul still in continuous use in Texas. I mention that Mrs. Toubin is Michael Pasternak, our candyman's, sister. Mendel calls out, "let's go see it!" Not a bad idea! GPS. 5 minutes later, there we are! We text a picture of us in front of the shul that is locked. Michael quickly calls and asks, did you see the mikvah? What?! A mikvah in Brenham? It has since been filled, but, you can still see the outline. The whole experience was so telling about the rich Jewish culture that was once so vibrant in Brenham.... Maybe one day we can do a BLT Sunday morning session in Brenham. That would be nice...

The Last Day of Chanukah

Dear Friend,

Tonight we will kindle the 8th and final candle on the Menorah. Our Sages teach us that the tradition of lighting an additional candle each night of Chanukah demonstrates our obligation as Jews to grow each and every day

As an organization Chabad has grown in size and impact. Our plans for growth continue into 2012. As the year draws to a close please challenge yourself to grow in your giving.

There are many methods to contributing year end, all of which can benefit you on your tax return.

You may want to make your donation go even further by considering a dedication in our new Torah to be completed on Sunday, January 22. A “Weekly Torah Portion” dedication includes a full page ad, an opportunity to inscribe one of the final letters with the scribe and two reservations to the VIP reception which promises to be a very memorable celebration. All dedications of any amount are appreciated, and each one will receive a beautiful personalized commemorative certificate that will make a great Chanukah gift for yourself, for your family and for your friends. www.chabaduptown.org/torah

Here are some methods of giving that you should consider at year end. Remember that donations to Chabad of Uptown are 100% tax deductive (speak to your accountant to see how this will benefit you on your return).

Auto Donation - If you are planning to purchase a new vehicle in the next few months donating it to Chabad can bring you a greater value on your tax return. Your tax donation value would be evaluated based on www.KBB.com while selling it on the open market may bring you 30-40% of that value.

Real Estate Donation - You may have real estate that has depreciated in value. You can get the full appraised value for that real estate even if you couldn't sell it for that amount.

Appreciated Stock - Due to the shifts in the market over the past year you may have appreciated stock. Donating (transferring) the appreciated stock directly to Chabad helps you avoid capital gains tax while getting you a donation credit at 100% of the stock value.

Cash (or check or credit card) - Of course good old fashion donations via check, credit card or wire transfer to Chabad all can benefit you on your tax return. Speak to your tax advisor to see exactly how your contribution can benefit you. Donations to Chabad can be made via website www.chabaduptown.org/donate, Paypal or via mail. Feel free to email or call if you need more information.

Airline Miles - Donating airline miles or AMEX award miles or similar award programs is now considered a charitable contribution eligible to be deducted on your taxes. For this or for information on any other contribution please contact me by replying to this email.

The real value of your contribution is above and beyond the cash value as your dollars are directed to helping us achieve our mission to inspire every Jew regardless of affiliation or background and to provide opportunities for Jewish education and experience.

Chanukah Shabbat!

Wow! What a week! Chanukah events galore, and of course our own Chabad of Uptown Glow in the Dark Chanukah went off with a glow! (Did I say glow?) Over 130 Uptownians joined us for some glow fun, crafts, and more to the beat of a disco ball! Thank you Mendel Lazaroff for the great idea! Thanks to Ron Mart & Rivital Yadin for helping out with the lighting decor, Simon & Guy Simani for helping set up and Ariel Lipski & Susie Eshet for manning the registration!

Today is Yud Tes Kislev when Chassidim joyfully celebrate today and tomorrow as the Rosh Hashanah ("new year") of Chassidism (see "Today in Jewish History"), with farbrengens (Chassidic gatherings) and an increased commitment to the ways and teachings of Chassidism. We begin anew the yearly cycle of the daily study of the Tanya, Rabbi Schneur Zalman's major Chassidic work (as part of the "Chitas" daily study program.) Happiness is a serious problem

A beautiful Shabbos dinner was had with a packed house for our First of First Friday Shabbats for Chabad's Young Adults and Professionals. Although every Shabbos is a celebration at Chabad of Uptown, mark your calendars for our next First Friday, January 6!

Find Waldo when The Lord Spoke

The International Conference of Shluchim was an absolute inspiration. (Can you find me? :)) Seeing old and making new friends, learning and sharing ideas and spending time with family all comes to a crescendo with the closing banquet with close to 5000 Rabbis and supporters under one roof. If you were not able to see it live, we have posted recordings of some the speeches, most notably England Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. Visit www.chabaduptown.org/132865.

One of the messages of Rabbi Sacks was that the Rebbe was a great leader. He pointed out "That a good leader creates followers, but a great leader creates leaders". Indeed, this past weekend, in the absence of Chabad shluchim, members are inspired to lead and teach themselves. We thought that you may enjoy this captured moment, as Terry Lewis assists Layn Bowers to put on tefillin at the weekly Sunday morning Chabad of Uptown signature BLT (= bagels, lox and tefillin) in the absence of Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff who was attending the annual conference of shluchim. :)
