Heifer reading and Pesach is coming!

Dear Friends,

This week, Parshas Ki Sisa marks another special Torah reading (of which some say it is also Biblically mandated) - Parshas Parah.

The Torah reading of Parah (Numbers 19) is added to the weekly reading. Parah details the laws of the "Red Heifer" and the process by which a person rendered ritually impure by contact with a dead body was purified.

(When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity in time for the bringing of the Passover offering in the Temple. Today, though we're unable to fulfill the Temple-related rituals in practice, we fulfill them spiritually by studying their laws in the Torah. Thus, we study and read the section of Parah in preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover.)

Wednesday evening Young Professionals class is going strong, join the hottest group in town! 8:30-9:30 pm.

Thursday classes are also on schedule for midday lunch 12 pm and another in the evening at 8 pm.

Purim is HERE!!!

What a weekend at the Intercollegiate Shabbaton at Texas A&M! Over 140 students from across Texas gathered for weekend of inspiration with over 35 from Houston alone! See some pictures taken before and after Shabbos here!

We got back in time to (run Hebrew School on Sunday morning) and join the Friendship walk with over 400 participants! A great thanks to all of you who sponsored Chaya Mushka and Mendel for their walk!

Monday morning found Rabbi Chaim headed to a Kosher certification conference in Dallas....

And the whirlwind of Purim is on its way!!!

Please join us for Purim Saturday Night Live at Chabad of Uptown at 8 pm!!! It will be great fun, comedy and mitzvahs galore! Megilah Reading will begin at 8 pm sharp!

Make sure to do all four mitzvos ON SUNDAY: Megillah reading, 2 gifts of food to at least one person, 1 gift to at least two poor people and participate in a royal feast!!

WOW! I have never been at a double Pidyon Haben for two people, well it picked up steam and our Young Adults and Professionals group hosted a Pidyon Haben for FOUR of our participants! Mazel Tov to Eric Rubenstein, David Barsky, Brad Dennen and Leon Trakhtenberg on finally redeeming themselves!! Over 40 young professionals revelled over kabob, burgers and beer and learned the spiritual significance of the redemption of the firstborn!
11 dozen eggs, 20 lbs of matbucha, 15 kugels, three cakes and more makes up Chanie's part of the cooking storm as we gear up for the Texas college shabbaton to be held this weekend at Chabad Student Center at Texas A&M in College Station! Over 120 students are expected from across Texas and even as far as Oklahoma as we celebrate Shabbat, sing, learn and experience a weekend to remember! In other news...

Chanie returned from the annual conference of 2500 Chabad Lubavitch shluchos with Chaya Mushka - inspired!
Rabbi Chaim held a small mezuzah placing ceremony at the Israeli Consulate this morning on their (new) front door together with Vice Consul General of Israel Belaynesh Zevadiah and "the king" of the Young Professionals group, Aaron Friedman.
Over 30 young professionals packed the house of Club 1019 for the Young Adults & Professionals class called "Stump D'Rabbi" where participants asked questions about religion, life, relationships… you name it, nothing was off color or off limits!
Thursday, 27 Shevat marks 9 days (or is it years?) since Rabbi Chaim & Chanie entered into the covenant of marriage on a brisk cold night on Eastern Parkway in NYC. Happy Anniversary. They are married. Just saying.
Rabbi Chaim is still sore 30 hrs after anesthetic from a filling for a fractured tooth (and talks like he has marbles in his mouth?). Whatever....

Home Alone For Shabbos...

An amazing Shabbat was had by all as close to 40 enjoyed each others company over traditional and new fruit at the Tu B'Shvat One Shabbat One World dinner. We were featured in the internationally syndicated story here!
The concert with Gad Elbaz was big hit! Great program, singer and of course cause (oh yeah, don't forget the amazing sushi at the pre-concert reception)!
Our Thursday study of the Chassidic discourse, Basi Legani, continues this week discussing the purpose of life in Earth. You can join at any time!
Next Wednesday, Feb. 10 8:30-9:30 pm, a special Young Adults & Professionals class will be held, called "Stump D'Rabbi". Just go ahead and make my day, ask! Chanie is in NYC with Chaya Mushka. Chanie is attending the annual conference of 2500 Chabad Lubavitch shluchos and Chaya Mushka will be with over 500 girls at the simultaneous conference for young Shluchos.... The conference is held each year on this freezing weekend, because Shabbos marks 22 Shevat, the yartzeit of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, wife of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Therefore, this weekend we will feature a reality Shabbat entitled "Three Rabbis and the babies, Home Alone for Shabbat"!

This Monday is Yud Shevat, and will mark Sixty Years to the day since our beloved Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson of righteous memory, was asked to assume leadership of the Lubavitch movement on the passing of his father in law and predecessor. On the first Yarzeit of the passing of the previous Rebbe, when the Rebbe finally accepted leadership of the movement, in his "Mission Statement" on that historic day, the Rebbe established the foundation of his vision on three loves; "Ahavat Hasherm" - love of G-d, "Ahavat HaTorah" love of Torah, and central to the three of them - "Ahavat Yisrael" love of your fellow man.
We have been preparing for this special day with an in depth study of the monumental Maamar, - Chassidic discourse - Basi Legani 5710. Although the class was only supposed to last three weeks, by democratic (actually, unanimous) vote it has been determined to continue learning this maamar until conclusion. Please join us for some very thought provoking and introspective study and conversations! No prior knowledge required!
So a 17 year old puts on teffilin on a plane. Everyone freaks out. News everywhere are now talking about teffilin. Nothing make me happier than to see all the news agencies including the Houston Chronicle promoting teffilin! Read about teffilin at www.chabadtexas.org/tefillin. USA Today "The less we know, the more we fear both Muslims and Jews" as if anyone thought he was a Jewish terrorist! They have changed the article title since.... But, hey, if some Jew sees it and is inspired to learn more about teffilin - that is cool!

the road warriors are back!

Dear Friends,

A wonderful time was had by the clan on our road trip up north. Probably the greatest moment was realizing that the drive up to Michigan was fun, but, now we had to get back!

We spent two days visiting Chanie's sister, Elkie Wolf in Chicago (18 hrs), then drove on to Commerce, Michigan to spend the rest of the week at Chanie's sister Esti Greenberg. The kids loved playing with their cousins, going to school with them and most of all seeing and playing with SNOW!! A sled was not to be found, so Tatti (they always get these jobs) bundled up as well, busted open an empty diaper box and made a makeshift sled while the other adults watched with glee from the window!

While there, Chanie and I visited an amazing facility, the flagship Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield, Michigan. They have huge facility with therapy rooms and "Life Town", a realistic 5,000 square foot indoor town features its own movie theater, beauty salon, pet shop, library, drug store and bank where kids with special needs learn life skills. They were chosen from over 500,000 other non-profit charities to enter a second round of voting the Chase Community Giving campaign to win $1,000,000. The voting will begin on Jan. 15, only for one week, through Facebook, and each user can only vote once. They are the ONLY JEWISH ORG in this competition. We have our own chapter of Friendship Circle here in Houston who do amazing work and will have their second annual Friendship Walk in February!

December Dilemma

LEAVE YOUR DECEMBER DILEMMA HERE!

Dear Friends,

Each year at this time a dilemma arises. A different dilemma though then you might be thinking about. This dilemma is about how to distribute the dollars that have been allocated for Tzedakah (charity) before the year is out. The reason this often takes place in December is because the IRS allows contributions made before December 31st to be considered for a deduction against your taxes for that year.

This year unfortunately many people are not experiencing this dilemma. The current state of the economy has hurt many peoples savings, their jobs, and sadly our positive upbeat American and Jewish state of mind.

It is my prayer that if you are one of those that have been hurt by the current economy that things turn around for you in the coming year. It is my fervent wish that the worst is over and that we can only share good news moving forward.

If you are among the fortunate ones that the December Dilemma still applies to you, I hope you'll consider Chabad of Uptown in your year end contributions.

You see, Chabad of Uptown is ever more important in these troubled times. In times of challenge people look towards us and other similarly important organizations for moral support even more perhaps then when things are good. People look for hope! They hope to see that although the major "pillars" of our economic stability may crumble, the organizations dedicated to Torah, G-D and the Jewish people, the "other" Pillars stand strong and thrive.

This year, Chabad of Uptown has grown tremendously, including moving to a location of its own, the expansion of activities catering to young professionals and other programs. These activities have broadened the base and impact of Chabad of Uptown on the surrounding neighborhoods and broader Jewish community.

With all the growth, we have all been responsibe, cutting our expenses and being extremely watchful of every dollar spent. Chabad has always been known for stretching a dollar and we are now stretching that same dollar to new tensions. We still need you! We are still struggling to pay our bills, but, there are still a few hours left to the end of the year. You can help!

Parking info @ Judah Maccabee's factory

Judah Maccabee's factory has limited parking. There are some parking spaces in the street, but, there are MANY parking spaces one block away at our remote parking marked at Prosperity Bank for Chabad of Uptown at the corner of San Felipe & Briarglen. See www.chabaduptown.org for the map.

Please bring limited bags. Security measures will be in effect.

WOW! This past week was on a high with a beautiful gala on Sunday benefitting the newly dedicated Chabad Lubavitch Center and decorated with flowers sponsored by our very own Ben Shamoolian of Houston Flowery. Then we had the Tuesday upshern of Levi - he is now a big boy!!

We look forward to having you join us this week for one of these fantastic Chanuka programs, see below for details! As always, Friday night services are at 6:30 pm and Shabbat morning Shabbos mevarchim tehillim at 8:30 am, Services at 10 am followed by Kiddush and Farbrengen.

Remember to light the menorah BEFORE shabbos candles to be lit at 5:05 pm. Although services are at 6:30 pm, we will light the menorah at 5:00 pm, you are welcome to join us.
